D-RATS 2022

In October 2022, NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) conducted a series of analog missions at Black Point Lava Flow, several miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona. This training ground has been a heritage site of lunar training since the Apollo era.  The Desert Research and Technology Studies (D-RATS) testing series was originally active from 2009 to 2012 using the Space Exploration Vehicle (SEV) as an analog for future Pressurized Rovers. The purpose of the 2022 D-RATS test was to inform future Artemis missions that would include such a rover.

I was part of a multidisciplinary team in charge of assessing, renovating, and maintaining the legacy SEV to prepare it for this mission. The vehicle had not been updated for testing in over a decade, so our team sorted through documents and assessed existing hardware to make it habitable again. Astronauts lived, worked, and relaxed inside the vehicle for multiple days and nights, necessitating the need for renovating interior components. In particular, I worked on the water system, toilet, air conditioner, and a whole new adjustable arm rest design. We also designed and built new hardware to support mission objectives, such as a 5-screen “video wall” to support “drive by camera” operations.

During the mission itself, my team and I spent multiple weeks at the testing site maintaining the cabin and assisting the testing team and crew. Between mission segments, we would clean the interior and swap out hardware for different driving modes.

Here I am posing with a 35lb EVA backpack on Media Outreach Day. This backpack was designed by engineers at Kennedy Space Center to support crew in the field during EVAs.
